Running through the whole of east Manchester the Medlock Valley is a major environmental and recreation resource for the area.
The river begins at Strinesdale Reservoir to the north east of Oldham and flows through the heart of east Manchester. It runs east to west through Clayton Vale, Philips Park, SportsCity, Medlock Outlook, Holt Town and the Lower Medlock before joining the River Irwell at Castlefield in the City Centre.
The Industrial Revolution exacted a heavy toll on the river, with factories and waste tips lining its banks. Restoration of the river and its landscape has seen an improvement in water quality and the return of fish and other wildlife.
