Medlock Valley Environment
This section contains information on the natural environment of the Medlock Valley.
Green spaces in the Medlock Valley include private gardens, allotments, parks and amenity grassland, planted shrubberies, playing fields, golf courses, grounds of buildings, churchyards and cemeteries. These areas provide important places for wildlife in urban settings, as well as contributing to the health and well-being of local people. Their proximity to schools and housing also make them an ideal resource for learning about the natural world.
In addition to the grassland that dominates these green spaces, they often contain wood, scrub and ponds. Some of these natural features may have been in existence for many years and support a rich variety of well-established plants and animals. In fact, many priority habitats and species can be found within the boundaries of urban managed green space sites, including those identified in the Greater Manchester Biodiversity Action Plan (visit www.gmbiodiversity.org.uk for more information).
Environmental actions for urban green spaces include:
- Providing habitats for wildlife, aiding biodiversity
- Helping to stabilise urban temperatures and humidity
- Absorbing pollutants in air and groundwater
