Medlock Valley Project

Clayton ValeThe Medlock Valley Project

The Medlock Valley Project, set up in 2003, is a partnership between several agencies and the local community. It aims to ensure that the Medlock Valley, including Philip's Park, becomes a focus of everyday life in East Manchester and a green resource for the city. The project works to improve access, usage and address long-term management issues in the valley. The Northwest Development Agency recently approved almost £2million to be spent in the area over the next two years. The money will be used to fund extensive improvements and a full community involvement programme.

In 2005, over 500 volunteers, including members of the Friends of Philips Park, helped to improve and promote the Medlock Valley. Amongst physical work carried out in the park, the project has been successful in:

  • Building a pond-dipping platform at the lake, enabling children to learn more about pond life.
  • Clearing out rubbish and duckweed.
  • Planting pond plants to attract more wildlife and improve the lake's appearance.
